Internal Server Error.. whole site down

March 12th, 2010
  • Hi,

My whole site is coming up with this message. It was fine this morning and then this afternoon it went poof.

The host has looked into it but can't find anything and thinks it may be something with the vBulletin. I'm pretty new to this but it's not making sense to me since my original site was a basic website that should still come up with the redirect turned off (which I did to check). I also have a vBtest board and it's down. (FWIW a few days ago the site was down for hours after something went wonky during a maintenance the host did.. something about MySQL and Apache.)

Anyway, I tried the fix in this thread: http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=197290 and the host disabled the mod security.. still nothing.

I'm at my wit's end and would truly appreciate any help. Are there any easy suggestions for me to try (I'd need very clear instructions since I'm still learning this stuff) or that the host should look more closely at (I have a managed server)?

FWIW Here (http://www.thehowcafe.com/forum/)'s my site if that helps at all. I can get into email, the ftp; cpanel and WHM (not that I know much of what I'm doing in the later two.. which is why I have a managed server. :o)

Thank you in advance for any help! :)

  • Hi Steve,

Thank you for replying. When I searched for help before posting I had seen your response to another person's thread saying much the same however how do I disable any plug ins if I can't get into the AdminCP? I can get into email, ftp, cpanel and WHM and the last two I'm not at all comfortable with which is why I have a managed server.

Also.. I haven't done any install of vB or updates, I've always had them done. I use IE's FTP function to upload files.. how do I upload things in ASCII vs another?

I have a brand new not been played on vB test board and it's not working either.. it was but now neither board are.

    Hopefully this helps clarify.

  • Internal Server errors are generally related to either a server problem, or added code to the vB files and/or templates.

The first thing I recommend is that you disable any plugins and reupload all the original vB non-image files (except install.php). Make sure you upload these in ASCII
format and overwrite the ones on the server.

Next, create a new style and choose no parent style. This will force it to use the default templates. Then change to this style and view your forums with it. Do you have the same problem?

If you do, this is a server issue.

  • If you are running suexec it could be your directory/file permissions are wrong. Thats about the only time I see 500 errors.
