How does liver damage build up?
March 11th, 2010If the person had a two or three year period of no alcohol intake and general good health with no signs of illness could sympotoms pop up later?
doctor to do a liver enzyme test, liver function
test. These will show if the liver cells have
been damaged and if the functions they
do to keep well is okay.
The liver is a very silent organ when it comes
to being injured. The cells maybe damaged,
but it isn't until the functions deteriate that
there are any symptoms.
Usually, a liver problem starts out with
inflammation inside the liver. This is because
the immune system responds to any damage
done in the cells. Patients can be walking
around with this inflammation and not know it.
The inflammation of the cells have to be
treated and the cause removed, like alcohol
or drugs. If this isn't done, then the disease
can progress where the liver cells die off and
then the disease will progress till the patient
is diagnosed with a disease known as
cirrhosis, which is the death of the liver cells
and scar tissue forming inside the liver.
It was very wise to stop the alcohol. But it
would still be very wise to have the doctor
check, maybe a couple of times, with blood
work to be sure.
The very first signs maybe tiredness...you
may also have flu like symptoms in some cases.
You may start to appear more yellow, known
as Jaundice. The skin will take on a yellow
to orange color and so will the whites of the
eyes. You may notice a darkening of the
urine from a light yellow normal color to
an orange or brownish color. Your stools
may not have color to them or will keep
losing color till they are almost a whitish gray.
Remember, that these symptoms may
not appear right away...
All liver patients are told not to take any
alcohol. They are to tell the doctor of
any medications they are on: over the counter,
herbs, herbal teas, vitamins, minerals,
street drugs, and prescriptions prescribed
by other doctors.
I hope this is of some help to you.
