Dilemma with my 10 and 7 years olds getting to school?

March 11th, 2010
  • My kids begin school at 9am- they are able to arrive on school grounds with supervision at 840- no earlier. I began a job that requires my presence at 830 am.
If they take the bus- they leave the house at 815 and walk to the bus stop for pickup at 830. I have to leave the house- no later than 8am.
My only option seemed to be paying for a 'before school' program- costing me about 40 dollars a week- seems absurd to pay that just to buy some time.
My husband says we should give them a key and/or the alarm code to let themselves out in the morning- I don't think they are old enough/responsible enough- and I fear something can happen to them- if anyone creepy knew they alone had access to the house with no parents in the morning. any suggestions?? I'm working only to maintain health benefits- and once I've paid for that- there really isn't much left- so the 40 a week is killing me- for a 30 minute overlap. and no- I dont have the option to change my schedule! help?!

  • Try make your kids carpool with someone. This should by you some time.

  • Do you have an elderly neighbor that could help out? Most seniors get up horrifically early, and for maybe $20/week they could use some company for a bit each day, and the kids could leave the same time as you do. It could be a mutually beneficial thing. Dont want to pay the $20/week? How about if they watch the kids for a bit every morning, and the kids could shovel their walk when it snows? Life is full of possibilities!

  • I agree you should find a friend or neighbor you can leave them with on your way out. We've driven people's kids to school under those circumstances, and it's no bigger hassle than just driving our own. Especially if you offer in exchange to do pick up or bring their kids to some after-school or weekend activity that all the kids do, a lot of people would probably be happy to help you out. Another possibility is, how far is the bus route? If they're not at the beginning of it, perhaps you could drive them to a different drop-off area where the bus picks up by or before 8.

  • they're old enough

  • Maybe try to carpool them with a friend's parents that drive their kids to school and you can pick them up later in the day after school.

  • I think that they are too young. You might ask a neighbor or a parent who is a classmate to watch you kids for that 10 minutes. Offer to watch her kids when she needs you.

  • Hmm, this is a toughy. Can you see if a neighbor can watch them until they head off for the bus stop? If not, the before school program is your only option.

EDIT: Someone suggested an eldery people. That's a great idea!

  • Do you have any friends or neighbours whose kids also go to the school at the same time, you can ask them to assist you, see if they are willing to drop your kids and if you are able to maybe you can pick their kids when you pick yours. A give and take. If that is not an option do you have any family members who could help you for a short while.

I personally do not like the idea of leaving kids alone in the house, its better to be safe than sorry.

Hope this helps. I don't know if it did but............

  • I would most definitely see if a neighbor could be of help here- if you have any.
You could let the neighbor know that you are leaving the house at 8am and the watching the kids walk over to their house. ask if it would be any trouble for them to watch them walk to the bus stop. Offer to pay, and if they decline let them know anytime they need someone to feed a pet, watch their home while their away, check their mail etc- just ask. be grateful if they agree to do it.
